symptoms of anxiety disorder

An anxiety attack is a scary and disturbing condition that interrupts your life and can lead to depression, isolation, and even more fear. An anxiety attack is defined by an immediate onset of intense fear that grows out of control within a short period of time and dissipates within a few minutes.

Anxiety is that state of mind which is under pressure of stress and is the result of some fear about an event that is likely to happen affecting the person’s life. There are various reasons why anxiety comes to us. Anxiety is good to a certain extent since it tests our body’s ability to respond to situations and find out methods to overcome these situations. Let us have a quick look at what causes anxiety.

Anxiety is caused by several factors. A history of anxiety running in the family, an impending situation that is about to happen like the declaration of results in an examination, death of a loved one, worsening health condition of someone in the family, are some of the pertinent causes for anxiety. What causes anxiety is to be understood first before trying to understand the remedies for this disorder.

But if you suffer from these attacks, you know those minutes seem like hours. The cycle that you find yourself in of being calm and suddenly becoming panicked is life altering. If you are tired of this cycle and want to get help with your condition, please read on to learn how.

The panic cycle involves three behaviors. First, you have a trigger which can be a place, situation, emotion, physical sensation, smell, or something else. This trigger leads to a perceived danger or increased anxiety. Once this happens, your body goes immediately into a defense mechanism called the fight or flight response.

This response is why you suddenly feel your heart race, you breath harder, and feel like you must “get away.” This response mechanism is basically tripping up in your body forcing you to feel as though you are in danger when really you are not. The attack itself can be so overwhelming that some people feel as though they are experiencing a heart attack. The fear of getting a panic attack is often enough of a trigger to actually induce one.

The first step in controlling your panic attacks is learning what triggers them. Once you recognize the triggers, you can take steps to avoid them or do something that will help your body relax before the attack happens.

Triggers can be from your work, family situation, fear of public places, anxiety about money, anxiety about an upcoming exam at school, among other things. You can treat your attacks with medicine but this is not always effective and many medications are habit forming and addictive.

You can learn to control your attacks and prevent them with behavior modification therapies and simple strategies like meditation. Many resources are available online to teach you how to take control of your body and mind to help relieve and prevent anxiety attacks.

do i need anxiety medication
I dont believe social anxiety needs medication but i have all the symptoms and have trouble even gettin out of

my dorm room to get food.i missed most of my lectures because of it and because it is obviusly deppressing and confusing to be so alone and to know that my behaviour is ridiculous and cowardly.i still havent overcome it and i think its getting worse.i have avoided even my cllosest friends and have made excuses to my parents because of my acedemic performance going way down.i feel guilty and scared and confused and i dont know how i can go back to where i was 2 yrs ago.i feel it is causing problems in all aspects of my life now and i cant even help myself.my physical appearance has deteriorated and i probably look deppressed and cant seem to make any friends here.i think i will fail uni and have to go back home a dissapointment to my parents.i just needed to say this to someone …what should i do?

First, I would go and get an evaluation to confirm social anxiety or maybe clinical depression. Medication can help a lot if you get on the right one. Its different for each person. The medications can take some time to be effective. Some up to three months. It really takes a page out of your life. The sooner you get started, the better. Come clean with your parents. They will know somethings up, and would be more willing to help you if they understood. I’ve been where you are and its awful. Hope you get better.

Ask UNMC – I worry about everything. My friends think I have anxiety. Do I need medication?
